More storage, less energy
Last week, our administrators team stepped in the data center. They changed and synchronized 8 disks of one of our storage servers, the famous NAS.

You consume more and more storage space. The volume of datas increases by 50% per year. With large hard disks this was not a problem for us since we had XXL servers (48 disks per server).

But since last year we decided to switch for full SSD. The benefits are numerous: division by 10 of the
energy consumption and data access speed.

So we used 300Go drives with 24 disks per server sliced per group of 8 disks. We customized the servers ourselves  on the base of HP servers with 1 controller card by disk group.

To not increase too much the energy consumption by multiplying the storage servers. We decided to replace the 300 Go Intel disk with 512Go Crucial M4 after comparing the failure rates by model and brand.

We stayed conservative on the choice of the model since it's a model released in 2012. They are still engraved in 25 nm guarantee of sustainability in relation to the new engraved finest models.

These hardware enhancements have allowed us to further improve the computational speed of the pages. We went in a sustainable way below 180 ms per page.

We still have some ideas to make the sites even faster :-)

We added the feature Freemium to the Pro offers.
The Freemium can allow free access to visitors to your restricted content (articles, download, photos, ...)
The number of items, and the time period are adjustable.
That way, a visitor (not registered or subscribed to your site) can read for instance 2
restricted items for a period of 2 days. Once he has read the 2 items, he must register or subscribe (depending on the restriction applied) to access new restricted items.

Today Pinterest is the essential social network to share photos, so it's natural that we decided to implement it in the webservice Gallery.

You could already restrict the access to the site with a double protection to create an Intranet. To do this, simply go to the menu Management > Security and apply a restriction called with a strange name "Outside IP profiling"

The principle is simple, access to the site is directly accessible to the IP range allowed. If you do not have the correct IP address, we ask you to register or authenticate if it is already done.

Full HD for your videos!
Following the WebTV improvements, and after an overhaul of our internal coding system, we added  the format 1080p.

1080p is a standard HD CIF, and indicates that the video displays 1920 pixels width and 1080 pixels in height. In practice, our encoder can detect that your
video source uploaded is a 1080p video and then notifies the generator of HD format to produce a quality of 1080p HD.

Note that this detection is available - for now - only for our customers WebTV PRO.

Examples of encoding of a clip from the cartoon Big Buck Bunny :) I let you see the difference in quality, especially in full screen.
