10 optimizations on SEO
Lately,  we have made ​​various tests to optimize the source code of WMaker. The aim is always the same: improve the indexing of your content by search engines.

The field of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is changing very fast. It is an increasingly fierce
competition. Even the smallest details are important to put the odds on your side and hoping to be well referenced.

Here we go with the summary of the 10 changes that have been put into production.

1.H1 tag in articles
During the first decade of the 2000s, the tag <h1> was a very powerful tag in the eyes of search engines. So powerful that the web is full of articles in which the power of this tag is counted, but unfortunately <h1> does not shine as much as before in the eyes of the engines. In this article from October 2009 , SEOmoz led a very detailed study of the relative impact of <h1> tag. What they highlighted in 2009 was still true in the search ranking factors by 2011. We can discover that not only <h1> tag is no longer decisive, but it may even be against productive if misused.

Conversely, for many years, in the inside pages, the source code WMaker placed in <h1> the site title and the articles title in <h2>. This content structure works well on indexing and with the relative weight of the contents placed between the tags.

Nevertheless, the myth surrounding the <h1> tag is strong. Periodically, you ask why, in the inside pages, the title of the articles is not in <h1>. So to be able to respond effectively, we conducted a test on the site tourmagazine.fr

We followed the positioning of a pool of articles in Google with a <h1> tag on the title of the article on article page . After the test, we found no decrease in SEO articles. The change is not detrimental, so we have applied it to everyone.

From now on,  we put  the <h1> tag in the title of the article on inside pages (used to be the <h2> tag) and the banner of the site goes to <div>.
On all other pages, the site banner remains in <h1>.


2. rel ="nofollow"
We have added nofollow attribute on links:
- Print
- Send to a friend
- Submit

No need to ask the robot to crawl those pages. It is best to send it  to some pages more interesting.

3. Canonical URL on print pages
We add a rel = canonical on all pages of the form http://blog.wmaker.net/Publication-differee-dans-les-Web-TV_a1147.html?print=1
This prevents duplicate content with the URL of the article.

4. Meta Title and Description in the restricted articles
For restricted articles, we ienter in the META the beginning of the article. We use the same text displayed in the modules Headlines or Go with with the flow.

This allows to have a description in the results of search engines.

When clicking on the result, of course we arrive on the login page, since the article is restricted.

5. META Title and Description in articles divided
The cut articles (eg: http://www.abcfeminin.com/les-coiffures-tendances-de-l-automne-hiver-2011-2012_a821_2.html ) now have META contextual, depending on the page:

- META title: Article Title | Page X
- META descritpion: Beginning of paragraph X

This prevents duplicate content in the meta. It also helps to have an accurate overview of the content page in the result page of the engines.

6. Sitemaps
It shows the path of sitemaps in the file robots.txt. First of all, you have to enable the generation of sitemaps in the back office.

7. Canonical on the Homepage
On each homepage, we put the Canical URL as the URL of the site.

Eg http://blog.wmaker.net  and http://blog.wmaker.net/?nocache=1 have now the same canonical and are considered the same page.

8. Store - Product information
The META Title now takes into account only the title of the product

Eg: http://blog.wmaker.net/shop/Wave-Ronds-de-serviettes_p80.html

- Before: Wave, Napkin Rings | Shop | Blog WMaker
- Now: Wave, Napkin Rings

This makes a clearer display in the results of search engines

9. Module "Title banner" : H1 on a picture
Previously, in the module title banner, we used the tag <h1> when displaying a text in the module.
Now it is also the case when using a picture.

10. It's your turn
We can clearly see it in the thread posted to the support, SEO is a topic of increasing concern, and you are right.

When you are faced with this question for the first time, you tend to think that it is essentially a technical intervention, which is generated by the source code of your pages by WMaker plateform. It's true. The source code of pages has its importance. That is why we remain vigilant on this point and we try our best to improve it, whenever it's possible.
However, keep in mind that producinge a source code of quality, easily referenced by search engines, is a necessary condition to be well referenced, but not sufficient.

In fact, your competitors also use CMS whose source code is optimized on SEO side. The competition is no longer playing at this level, but rather on the side of the relevance of content, how you present it to your users and most importantly, your ability to generate links to your site ... !
